A new application let’s users explore art galleries from all over the world in virtual 3D

Definitely most excited when I came across Artland application designed by two Danish entrepreneurs that makes possible the visualisation of a wide number of art galleries from all over the world at the commodity of my Internet connection. The concept of art dealing platforms it is surely not new, but the 3D integrations caught my attention. It is pretty amazing that I can view an art gallery from New York without having to fly 6,000 km.
Deconstruct/Reconstruct
I chose this particular application for my design exercise because of the 3D features and my experience with these as being very complex features to incorporate in an application. However, due to the scope of the exercise, I decided to focus on a more simple user action.
The uploading of a new artwork was rather confusing and long in the process. And as long as it held many moments of “I am not sure what to do here” it felt as a good re-design opportunity. Process wise, I begun by identifying the existing patterns used, the moment where the flow was breaking or felt unnatural or unnecessary and only afterwards, I started working on a new design solution.
Overall, it was an exercise that offered me more insights in different prototyping tools and design patterns. I gained knowledge in the mapping out of existing designs and how you can use the existing language (typeface, colours, shapes) and recreate new steps in the flow without changing drastically the appearance of the screens.
Adobe XD versus Sketch
I did carry out this design exercise in Sketch, as I have previously worked with Adobe XD and I feel rather confident in working with the tool. Actions felt unnatural at times, being accustomed with XD workflow, I felt as I had to take extra steps. I took over 46 screenshots in the application and I wanted to recreate it in Sketch, inserting a photo in the art board it was definitely too time consuming compared to XD. Otherwise, I definitely feel as both of them use the same principles and I got started in no time even though I had no prior interaction with Sketch.
Final results
I combined all the materials and laid them out as a portfolio page.
